Many major participants like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Sony announced that they would not send people to the conference seeing the Coronavirus outbreak and the number of rising cases all over the world.
Game Developers Conference was officially called off, which was scheduled on March 16th to 20th,2020 in San Francisco, California. This announcement was made a few hours after the second case of COVID-19 was confirmed by the officials. The officials in a statement said-“we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer.”
It wasn’t just the GDC, but this week Facebook’s F8 Developer event, Geneva Motor Show and the Mobile World Congress were called off as well. And it definitely seems these are not the last ones that are cancelled or postponed.
The people planning to attend the conference were sent an email answering their questions regarding refunds of the passes and hotels booked near the convention’s block.
The officials have lined up a few online events for the fans. The plan is, the presentations that are or will be submitted via video will be available online for free. The Independent Games Festival, Game Developers Choice Awards as well as some talks will be streamed on Twitch during the week the event was to take place i.e from March 16th to 20th.
International Games Development Association(IDGA) has teamed up with GameDev.world on a fundraiser for supporting the indie developers that may be impacted financially and will include “a Pay-What-You-Want games bundle, a public game jam, and free online live talks and Q&A translated in the worlds’ largest languages.”
GDC Organisers said:
After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.
Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.
We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.
